Tooth loss can occur anytime. It is a well-known fact that dental implants replace the tooth root, helping to strengthen the jawbone and restore full function. For anyone who loses one tooth or several teeth, implants can be the best and most highly successful solution to provide a healthy and beautiful smile. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, over 3 million Americans have dental implants, and that number is growing by 500,00 each year.
Dental implants have numerous benefits and change lives. They are designed to be permanent, maintain jawbone, and protect healthy bone from deterioration. Dental implants look, and feel like your natural teeth, and give you a secure and confident smile. One should note here that they can last a lifetime if properly placed and cared for. For the great majority of people, dental implants are an ideal solution to have a beautiful smile.
Dental implant surgery is usually accomplished in two phases and takes six to nine months in total. During phase 1 of surgery, the dentist attaches the implant to the bone. During phase 2, the crown is placed. The success rate of dental implants is 98%.
Dental Implant Treatment Procedure Steps:
- At the first appointment, we discuss with the patient our options for missing or damaged teeth, determine goals and go a thorough overview of the process. The patient has a dental exam (including CT scan and X-Ray), and we make an evaluation and treatment plan.
- If you are getting an implant to replace a damaged tooth and need tooth extraction before the implant procedure, the dentist will remove your tooth. In some cases, patients will need bone grafting (replacement of missing bone in your jaw with bone grafting material). After having a bone graft, you may need to wait up to 3 months to let your gums and jaw recover before implant surgery.
- During the implant surgery, the dentist will make a small incision in your gums and place the dental implants into the bone socket of the missing tooth.
- During a 3–6-month period, dental implants will fuse directly to the jawbone, and a small connector (abutment) will be attached to the implant to connect the implant to the crown.
- During the healing period, the gums will heal around the abutments.
- The crowns will be permanently attached to the implants.
